Hello Everyone!
Today I am sharing my first (successful) light up card. I tried once before I just could not get it to work. But after watching a few more videos I finally figured it out! I used the adorable Mama Elephant “Beach Chickies” stamp set to create a one layer beach party scene with some party string lights.
I first started with the general layout of my scene to see what I needed to mask off. Then I first stamped the string lights from the “Swinging Borders” stamp set. I stamped it twice masking off the bulbs that were overlapping. I stamped in black ink and heat embossed with clear embossing powder to make sure the string would still be visible after ink blending the background. Then I used my Silhouette to cut out tiny holes in the middle of the bulbs where later the light would shine through. Then, I stamped the sentiment in the middle from the Mama Elephant “Scripty Bday” stamp set and heat embossed in white.
After that, I first stamped the coconut cocktail, the chickie on the melon and the chickie with the cute flamingo floatie. After I let those dry for a moment, I masked them off and stamped the martini glass and the chickie on the beach towel. I added masks to all of the images and ink blended the background using distress oxides to create a beach scene. I also added some water droplets to the “sea” and some splatters to the sand. I removed all of the masks and watercolored the images using Kuretake Zig Markers.
Then I started on the light up feature. I determined where I wanted the battery and the lights to go. I decided to try out indirect lighting rather than adding LEDs right behind the lights since there were so many of them. I put the LEDs right below the string lights on the back of the panel. Then I built a circuit using copper tape. After I made sure that the worked I adhered them with a small dot of liquid glue. Careful not to get any adhesive on the metal connectors! Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures of the circuit – I’m sorry!
I cut out a piece of acetate that would go behind the string lights. At first I wanted to use tracing paper but I was afraid the light would not show as much since I chose indirect lighting. I colored the acetate where it would show with alcohol markers. Unfortunately the colors were so light that they don’t actually show up at all. But I still like the light up effect!
I closed off the panel using 3 layers of 3M foam tape and adhered everything to an A2 sized card base.
Now you just have to push the melon that the chickie is sitting on and the card lights up!
Thank you for stopping by and have a great day!
